Amazing Amalfi

Authenticity. Situated 60 km southeast of Naples, Amalfi is a coastal town of over 5,000 people on the Amalfi Coast. The area offers authenticity through its terrain, history, and culture. However, a unique aspect of Amalfi includes the reasoning behind its layout. In 1343, an earthquake cause a good portion of the city to slide into the sea-creating the interesting illusion we see today.

Mind-Blowing Duomo of Sant’Andrea. As an 11th century Maritime superpower, Amalfi expressed its wealth with one of the most elegant cathedrals in all of Italy. The Duomo of Sant’Andrea was crafted with Greek and North African influence in the 9th century. The ‘new’ portion came to be in the 19th century. Viewers are sure to see the exquisite masonry, mosaics, statues, and works of art within this recognizable structure.

A Look into the Past. Throughout Amalfi, one may experience a look into the past while walking through the cobblestone streets and gazing at ancient buildings. A legend tells that the name Amalfi comes from a nymph who was loved by Hercules. An ancient Amalfi tradition tells that a man, Giovanni Gioia, invented the compass in the 13th century.

Lends its Name to Italy’s Most Famous Coast. Amalfi shares its name with the breathtaking area that covers 30 miles known as the Amalfi Coast. To those who see it, it appears like the perfect postcard. Endless shades of blue as the ocean and sky collides, brilliantly colored structures and domes, and flourishing vegetation fill the scene. There are 13 towns spreading across a strip of this sun-kissed land and all have been declared by UNESCO as “World Heritage Sites”

Fountains of Fresh Water. Throughout all of Amalfi, there are fresh-water fountains for all to use. Some of them depict ancient works of art, such as the fountain outside of the cathedral. Also, Nativity Scenes have long been a tradition in and around Amalfi. A few of them are even in fountains, serving as both a refreshing purpose and view.

Impressive Scenery. Each year, about 5 million people visit the Amalfi coast to experience its UNESCO world heritage landscape and culture, sample the mouth-watering cuisine, and walk through streets rich in culture and history. With Amalfi’s impressive scenery so vibrant and enjoyable, there’s no doubt this sea-side village is one for the bucket list.
